I love European cars of the German variety. I have for as long as I can remember. And within German cars, I've always been partial to Volkswagen and Audi - there's something oddly familiar about them.

möbius one was designed as a log of sorts, for me to record the changes I make to this, one of my dream cars, which I am lucky....

Tires: Hankook Ventus V12

My car came stock with 18″ wheels as seen before on this site. The 19″ factory wheel option is 19″x8.5″ et 43 and they come wrapped in 255.35.19 tires. Because my Work wheels are almost of that identical speficification (offset is 45mm instead), I decided to stick to OEM sized tires. While my suspension is modified, I didn’t think that I was too low to cause any issues.

After doing some research, I decided to purchase a set of 255.35.19 Hankook Ventus V12s. Hankook has been getting some excellent reviews on Tirerack.com and many S4 owners recommend them. To make it more enticing, they are extremely well priced at this time. I had the tires delivered to Achtun!ng for mounting and balancing and for fine tuning with spacers if necessary. After mounting the tires on the wheels, a few things were immediately realized.

Firstly, I didn’t realize how stretched the 215 series tires were on these wheels. It wasn’t until a proper size tire got mounted on these that this became very obvious. Secondly, Hankook tires run a tad wide and the sidewall is rather square. This is readily apparent on the picture to the right. These tires are the very definition of meaty. Not exactly a bad thing at all, except for the fact that it somewhat dwarfs the lip on the wheels and suddenly they don’t look as aggressive as they once did (mainly on my previous car) – but that’s matter for another story. We test fit 15mm spacers on the rear wheels for a resulting offset of 30mm but realized that it would have been a bit too close to the fenders, and since H&R only makes 5mm and 15mm spacers, we had to go down to the nearest available size of 5mm, and decided to install one on each wheel.

I took the wheels home and gave them a thorough cleaning with wheel cleaning solution and a hand brush. I used Scotch Brite pads on the barrels to remove more than a year’s worth of grime. Then I proceeded to dry them off with a 200mph leaf blower and gave them each a coat of sealant to protect them a bit against the elements. After a couple of hours of hard work, the wheels were already looking like new so I re-mounted them on the car. (I should note that most of the photos up to this point have been taken with an iPhone 4. I should apologize for that, as it’s not something I’m used to – even on my prior project site, all photos were of higher quality, taken with a DSLR.)

The car immediately took on a more aggressive stance. But also a different stance than these wheels had previously portrayed. It was a bit difficult to get used to the new look at first, mainly because these wheels had already burned themselves into my head to look a certain way in my previous car, and now they looked completely different; not in a bad way – just different than I was used to. At this time the plan is still to swap out the lips for ones that are at least 1″ wider. This would convert these wheels to 19″x9.5, which is a good width. Offset-wise, I may be pushing it a little, but I would keep the same tires so in essence no clearance issues should arise. We won’t know until we do it though. I will update here when that happens. In the meantime, I have a couple of iPhone photos to show how the car sits as of now.
