I love European cars of the German variety. I have for as long as I can remember. And within German cars, I've always been partial to Volkswagen and Audi - there's something oddly familiar about them.

möbius one was designed as a log of sorts, for me to record the changes I make to this, one of my dream cars, which I am lucky....

KW V2 Coilover Suspension

07 1 2011

I must admit upgrading the suspension on this car was a tough decision, on many levels. On one hand, the stock S4 suspension is so good, that it’s almost a shame to tinker with it. The car handles great off the lot; very compliant and sporty but without being punishing at all. Unfortunately, there is some body roll, nose dive under hard braking not to mention a decent amount of wheel gap, so I knew I wanted to do something about it.

The sale of the ultra-low set of H&R coilovers I took off my MkV GLI before I sold it, meant I was able to afford a nice upgrade for the S4. After much deliberation, I decided to go with KW this time around. Unfortunately, my one stop shop for upgrades, Achtun!ng, doesn’t carry KW. However, Achtun!ng’s guru and good friend Dion referred me to Glenn with AMI Motorsports, and because of this, I was able to source a set of KWs at a fantastic price (give Glenn @ AMI Motorsports a call with any questions, they will definitely take care of you).

I decided to take it a step further and spring for the V2s rather than the basic V1 model as V2s allow for adjustable rebound damping, which would allow me to customize how the suspension feels on the car. The range of adjustability is modified by inserting a small hex wrench on the end of the coilover and turning clockwise or counterclockwise for harder and softer settings respectively. The kit comes preset at 9 on a scale from 1 to 18 where 1 is the softest and 18 is the hardest. I set them at an even 10 on all four corners before installation at Achtun!ng.

The only way I can describe the set up is as comfortable as stock but just a tad stiffer. I wanted a set of coilovers that could retain the comfort aspect of the stock S4 sport suspension but with less body roll and nose dive, and obviously lower to the ground and I think the goal was achieved remarkably with these. The only negative mark that I could say I have is that the shocks would need to come back out of the car if I wanted to adjust the rebound damping on them – not a big deal to me because I was fortunate enough to set them precisely at the right notch for my liking but that definitely was a lucky move on my part.
